Thompson Rivers University World Lands Third Major Contract for Pre-Olympic Training in China
Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops has won a third major contract for training related to the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in China. The contract is with China Net Communications (CNC), the largest telecommunications company in China and the official telecommunications provider to the 2008 Summer Olympics. TRU World, the international education division of the university, put forward the bid that will see TRU develop and deliver an eight-week intensive Media English and Media Terminology training program for three different groups of CNC site managers and high level company officials who will work closely with media agencies and television networks during the 2008 Summer Games in China.

Railway Tour Entrepreneur Accepts Thompson Rivers University Honorary Degree
A leader in the Canadian tourism industry will be recognized with an honorary doctorate degree from Thompson Rivers University next month. Peter R.B. Armstrong, founder, president and CEO of the Armstrong Group, the owner and operator of Rocky Mountaineer Vacations, will accept an honorary doctorate of letters degree at the university’s Fall Convocation ceremony to be held at its Kamloops campus at 3pm on Oct. 4.

Thompson Rivers University: Research Team Releases Results of In-depth Arts Study
Many first learn an appreciation of the arts in school, a recent study forming part of the Thompson Rivers University-based inquiry into the quality of life in small cities shows. The study, part of a five-year research initiative funded by a $1 million Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Community-University Research Alliance (CURA) grant, also found that while people most frequently think of painting and/or drawing when they hear the word 'arts' or the phrase 'artistic activity,' the most frequently mentioned "most important" arts-related activity in the total sample and in each community was music in some form, particularly listening to music and singing alone.

University of Alberta's Department of Drama welcomes new Playwright in Residence
The University of Alberta's Department of Drama announces Kevin Kerr as the incoming Lee Playwright in Residence. Kerr, a Governor General Award-winning playwright and co-founding member of Vancouver's Electric Company Theatre, will be in residency at the U of A for two years beginning in September. He will divide his time writing plays and helping other playwrights. Kevin Kerr is the second playwright to take up the Lee Playwright in Residence post, following inaugural Playwright in Residence, Don Hannah. The program at the U of A is the only one if its kind among Canadian universities.

Malaspina University-College: Biology Grad Remembers His Roots
Dr. Aaron Jex has gone a step further than most graduates to honour his home-town university-college. He's named an animal in honour of Malaspina University-College and three of his former professors. Jex, a graduate of Malaspina's Biology degree program, is now a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Melbourne in Australia.

Cape Breton University: The Earliest Evidence of Parental Care- 260+ million years ago
A newly published online article will bring the exciting research of parental care in extinct animals to the larger research world. Dr. Sean P. Modesto of Cape Breton University and Dr. Jennifer Botha-Brink with the National Museum in Bloemfontein, South Africa have prepared a scientific paper announcing the discovery of a small grouping of extinct animals, known scientifically as varanopids, in South Africa.

Sheridan Photography Student Wins International Award
Sarah Wright, a recent graduate of Sheridan’s Applied Photography program, is a first-place recipient in the 2007 Microsoft Future Pro Photographer Competition. Her photograph, "Femme Fatale", came first in the ‘People and Portraits’ Category. Ms. Wright was flown to Redmond, Washington earlier this summer to receive her prize, which included $2,000 cash, a Dell computer, Canon digital camera, and Adobe software. The contest was open to college and university students around the world.

Campaign to Share University of Windsor's Story with National Audience
Today the University of Windsor will launch its first major marketing initiative to spread the story of UWindsor's accomplishments in teaching, research and innovation, to an ever-larger, ever-changing audience. "The time is right for this campaign," said Kevin Doyle, Executive Director of Public Affairs and Communications. "Our research has shown that students, faculty, parents and alumni are overwhelmingly satisfied with their UWindsor experience. We'll be using this marketing exercise to reach out to a national and international audience - to share our unique attributes with people who don't yet know our story."

NAIT: Wristbands Available to Remember Dawson College Tragedy
The NAIT Students' Association is commemorating the one-year anniversary of the tragic events at Dawson College with a symbolic wrist band. Available by donation only at the NAITSA office (E131), proceeds from the Dawson College wrist band will go to the Anastasia De Sousa Memorial Award Fund. The wrist bands are blue and include the date of the tragic event (09.13.2006) with the name of the college.

University of Victoria: Student Entrepreneurs Cash In
A game promoting healthy eating and tools for customized podcasts were among the winning ideas from student entrepreneurs in this year's IDC Challenge. The University of Victoria's technology transfer office, the Innovation and Development Corporation (IDC), handed out more than $30,000 in cash prizes last night to winners of the third annual IDC Challenge: Vancouver Island Student Business Plan Competition before a panel of local business experts in Victoria.

Local painter and teacher Melinda Spooner has spent much of the summer talking with local residents about their special places, and in return she has given each of them a painting depicting both the scene and the private story shared. Photographer Ernie Kroeger has been pursuing the idea of understanding city spaces by linking photographs to walking. "I was inspired by conceptual artist Stanley Brouwn," says Kroeger. "Brouwn once declared that all the shoe shops in Amsterdam comprised an exhibition of his work.

Mount Allison University students will once again hit the streets of Sackville, Amherst, Shediac, and the Greater Moncton Area in support of the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation through Shinerama on Saturday, September 8. Over 400 students will be out in force shining shoes, hosting barbecues, and lending a helping hand in the communities in support of this worthy cause.
